American Seniors Can Get Their Economic Stimulus Checks Starting May 2009
Within a period of two months, in May of 2009, retirees and senior Social Security benefactors will get a $250 from the US Government as part of the recently passed economic stimulus bill.
The “senior payment” figures are as follows.
$250 for individual seniors and $500 for senior couples when both receive Social Security.
The amounts will be channeled to retirees, disabled people, SSI (Supplemental Security Income) beneficiaries, and older veterans as well. The recipients of the money do not need to fill a tax form or do anything like that. This is different from stimulus rebate distribution program of the year 2008. You only need to wait for the check to show up (kind of like a monthly reverse mortgage payment). You will get the amount in the same manner you get the Social Security disbursements - either through a check that comes through the US Mail or via direct deposit
State and federal retirees who do not currently receive the Social Security benefits are also qualified to receive this stimulus payout, but they may need to file their tax returns for the year 2009 to become eligible to receive the payouts.
This $250 pay out was not included in the draft bill of the economic stimulus package, when the House authored and approved it in late January 2009. It got included in the bill after a proposal made by Max Baucus, Democrat-Montana, who is also chairman of the Senate Financing Committee (SFC). The provision was also promoted by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Democrat- R.I.
This measure was supported by the AARP from its inception stage. AARP posted a letter to the law makers supporting the proposal. The Association for Retired Persons argued that, many senior retirees are in need of hardship relief but are ineligible for claiming workers’ tax credits. The AARP cited some research which showed that seniors tend to spend some payments “immediately”.

Thank you to all the people who care about senior citizens.
Thanks so much for passing the stimulus payment for Senior citizens. We really will need it in Phila., since our real estate taxes are going to be raised by 19%. That really will hurt us since we now have a problem paying the current real estate tax. Thanks, I am awaiting the checks arrival!!!!
We finally have someone in Washington who really cares about the people who are AMERICA. We know who they are in Washington who are for the PEOPLE. THANK YOU.
I agree taxes are high where you live because I used to live in New Jersey. If you can move to Florida you will pay way less taxes as Florida is geared to the retirees. They allow a $25,000 homestead exemption which helps too. I am paying under $600 per year in taxes for my home. It is not a castle, but it suits me fine. I am retired too and the stimulus check for $250 is much appreciated.
Tremendous appreciation is extended to Max Baucus, Democrat-Montana, chairman of the Senate Financing Committee (SFC) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Democrat- R.I., who also promoted this inclusion.
I am a disabled senior, who is alone, who relies on Social Security and Disability. Those like me are among the most vulnerable, yet it is shocking how overlooked and ignored we are!
There should be some system to define those in my ‘category,’ versus other citizens, so that we receive our care.
Medicaid (MediCal in CA) was banned some 4 months ago, with no indication if/when it will be reinstated, which leaves me with another black hole gap while prescription costs increase.
Dental care is another overlooked issue desperately needed by seniors, yet zero attention is given here.
We need more senators whose realities are outside of the bubble, like Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Financing Committee and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse!
We should all write to these sensible men in appreciation!!
Will people over 50 that receive V.A. benefits receive this payment
i work part time and on S.S.D. will i still get a chech?
